ADJUSTMENTS/ MANIPULATION
The term "adjustment" refers to the specific manipulation chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. The objective of the chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation, which results in an increased range of motion, reduced nerve irritability and improved function.
The adjustment made by the chiropractor consists of a short, specific thrust applied to a vertebra, which is occasionally accompanied by "pop". The audible sound is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which releases joint pressure (cavitation).
Following an adjustment, there are a variety of possible effects. Everything from euphoria, to relaxation, to slightly achy has been reported. If you have never been adjusted, slightly achy is the most common. This is due to the surrounding muscles and tissue tightening to hold the adjustment. Such tightening can fatigue these already weak muscles and create achiness.
The doctor will instruct you on how to best care for your adjustments and will give further recommendations for your care outside the office.
